Background
Over the last few years, functional imaging has been playing an increasing role in the management of patients with solid malignancy. Functional imaging is more and more routinely used for the work-up, treatment response evaluation and follow-up of cancer patients. More recently, preliminary data have also suggested the added value of functional imaging modalities to select and delineate more accurately the target volumes during the radiotherapy planning processes. Validation of these data is ongoing in several tumour locations.
Objectives
In this framework, the teaching course will aim at:
- Reviewing the basic principles of image acquisition with PET and MRI including discussions on tracer development and contrast mechanisms, and on image segmentation and registration.
- Discussing the present use of functional imaging with PET and MRI in head & neck, lung and prostate tumours, with special emphasis on their integration in the treatment planning process.
